Black History Month 2025

Dear colleagues,

In February, we come together to celebrate Black History Month. This year’s theme, “Black legacy and leadership: Celebrating Canadian History and uplifting future generations,” reminds us that Black History Month is not just about reflecting on the past, but also about addressing present challenges and committing to a brighter, more inclusive future.

This month presents us with a valuable opportunity to highlight, and pay tribute to, the richness of Black history, culture, and achievements. As this year marks the 29th anniversary of Black History Month in Canada, it is a time to celebrate the contributions of Black individuals who, throughout history, have shaped our diverse and dynamic country, as well as the world at large.

This month, and throughout the year, Parks Canada is committed to fostering awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the impact of Black community leaders, innovators, artists, and actors of change. We acknowledge the struggles and triumphs that have shaped our shared history, as well as the ongoing efforts toward equity and justice. While we celebrate the progress that has been made, we also recognize that there is still work to be done to ensure true inclusion and equity. We acknowledge that systemic barriers and inequities continue to exist within our society. Addressing these challenges requires an ongoing commitment, and we are steadfast in our dedication to creating a workplace where every employee feels valued, included, and empowered.

Black History Month Events

Throughout February, a series of events and activities will provide opportunities for learning, raising awareness, and coming together in support of positive change. These events include guest speakers, workshops, cultural celebrations and much more. Please visit the dedicated ParksNet page for all the information and details, including registration requirements.

We strongly encourage all team members to participate in these events. They are not only opportunities to learn and grow but also a chance to connect and show solidarity with our Black colleagues and communities. Let us use this month as a catalyst for reflection, education, and action, both individually and as an organization. By working together, we can build a workplace and a society where equity, inclusion, and opportunity are a reality for all.

Thank you for your continued dedication and commitment to fostering an environment where everyone can feel seen, heard, and respected.

In solidarity,
