Parks Canada welcomes a new National Park Reserve in P.E.I

Dear colleagues,

Today marks a historic occasion as we celebrate the announcement of Canada’s 48th national park reserve on the northwestern shores of Epekwitk (Prince Edward Island). This historic agreement, reached between the Mi’kmawey Kapmnt Ta’n Nikana’tu’tij Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaw-Saqmaq — represented by Chiefs Darlene Bernard and Junior Gould — and Parks Canada, highlights our mutual commitment to protecting the ecologically and culturally significant lands of Pituamkek.

Pituamkek, meaning “At the Long Sand Dune,” is renowned for its coastal dune systems, old-growth forests, and unique geological formations. This area is not only important for its natural beauty, but also for its role in mitigating extreme weather impacts, as seen during Hurricane Fiona. The Establishment Agreement includes co-management governance, guardian programming, community-based employment opportunities, and commitments to climate-smart infrastructure development.

This milestone reflects our dedication to reconciliation with Indigenous peoples. By working together, we are taking action to protect this iconic natural and cultural landscape for future generations.

All Parks Canada team members now have another reason to be truly proud of the work we do on behalf of Canadians. Thank you and congratulations to all who have contributed to this incredible achievement.
