Changes to the Supplementary Death Benefit Regulations

Good day,

I would like to inform you that recent changes have been made to modernize the public service Supplementary Death Benefit. The death benefit is similar to a decreasing term life insurance benefit paid to your beneficiaries upon your death. It applies to most public servants who contribute to the public service pension plan.

As of June 1, 2024, if you currently have coverage under the death benefit, you will be able to name up to 5 beneficiaries, including minors. Your current beneficiary is still valid. If you wish to keep your current beneficiary, no action is required on your part. By July, you will receive communications from the Pension Centre with more information about accessing the updated portal. You will then be able to electronically name, view, and change your beneficiaries online.

For more information, please consult the Information Notice on Changes to the Supplementary Death Benefit Regulations. Please direct any questions to the Government of Canada Pension Centre.

Thank you,
