Veterans’ Week 2023

Dear colleagues,

As we observe Veterans’ Week, I’m pleased to share some milestone anniversaries with you that underscore our deep respect for our veterans and those who continue to wear a uniform in the service of Canada.

This year marks “75 Years of UN Peacekeeping” – a significant milestone that highlights our gratitude and respect for the brave individuals, including many Canadians, who have dedicated their lives to global peace.

Additionally, 2023 marks the Canadian Naval Reserve’s 100 remarkable years of service to Canada. Recently, as part of our Hometown Heroes program, Parks Canada celebrated Commodore (retired) Laraine Orthlieb and her pioneering career with the Canadian Naval Reserve. I hope you will take time to watch this interview with Commodore Orthlieb to learn more about her significant impact on the Naval Reserve, including her remarkable contributions as a mentor to female leaders.

Canada’s values are built upon a legacy of service, sacrifice, and an unwavering commitment to democracy, freedom and tolerance. In the days leading to Remembrance Day, let us remember and express our gratitude to all veterans and currently serving personnel, for their many sacrifices. And let’s also acknowledge their families who have shared them so generously with us all.

Thank you for taking time to remember our veterans and our currently serving personnel on November 11 and throughout Veteran’s Week. In doing so, we honour their service and we join them in upholding the values that define Canada.
