In the event of strike activity in the core public service

As you were informed in the email message sent on April 11, 2023 from the President & Chief Executive Officer, many federal government employees in the Core Public Administration represented by the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) are in a legal strike position.  While Parks Canada employees are not in a legal strike position, they may be affected by strike activity.  As part of our preparedness, we are actively monitoring, planning and communicating information regarding potential strike activities that could occur around Parks Canada facilities in the National Capital Region and in the regions.

During this time, it is possible that you could see strike activity and/or picket lines at your workplaces, with minimal notice.  As a reminder, PSAC striking employees are not permitted to prevent Parks Canada employees from reporting to work and the safety of our employees remains our priority.

Should you encounter strike activity, it is important that Parks Canada employees and managers behave respectfully and professionally regardless of their opinions about the strike mandate of PSAC members.  Employees working on-site should not confront striking employees and they should follow the procedures below:

  1. All Parks Canada employees should report for work as scheduled at their usual workplace, unless otherwise excused or notified to report to a different work location.
  2. All Parks Canada employees must have in their possession their Federal Government – Parks Canada employee identification card to show upon request.
  3. All Parks Canada employees working in the office should have the work phone numbers of their supervisor and director readily available.
  4. Parks Canada employees encountering interference, harassment or are concerned for their personal safety, should move to a safe location immediately and contact their supervisor for further direction or assistance.

We ask employees to be patient in accessing workplaces in case of disruption and to collaborate with other departments, building management, or law enforcement, whichever the case may be.  We assure employees that by following these guidelines, they will not experience any loss of pay due to time lost in such situations.

Employees who have further questions or concerns regarding potential strike related activities and/or requirements are encouraged to speak with their supervisor and/or manager.

Thank you.

Reminder to managers: In keeping with Parks Canada's procedures for communications with employees, managers are responsible for ensuring all employees under their responsibility receive the information intended for them. It is important that you find a means to transmit this message and, if any, the attachment(s) to employees without access to Parks Canada e-mail or the intranet, e.g., by posting it, circulating a paper copy or by any other appropriate means.
