Cancellation of Lock & Paddle 2026

Parks Canada has made the difficult decision to cancel Lock & Paddle, scheduled for Saturday, July 18, at the Peterborough Lift Lock National Historic Site.

The decision has been made out of an abundance of caution due to forecasted weather conditions and concerns about air quality, with the health and safety of participants, volunteers and staff remaining our highest priority.

As this event is dependent on the availability of the Peterborough Lift Lock and operational requirements during the navigation season, Lock & Paddle will not be rescheduled this year.

Lock 23, located on the River Road, is a quiet lock station. This is one of the few lock stations that permits fire pits. Boaters can access the nearby trail for those who wish to walk, jog or cycle.

Lock 23 otonabee
Constructed: 1895 - 1898

Superintendent R.B. Rogers pioneered the use of concrete in lock construction and this lock served as a test for this design which he pronounced a success after the first winter trial. Strict attention was paid to the combination of materials making this the first concrete lock to be constructed in Canada. Lock 23 was also home to a prime example of the type of Lockmaster dwelling built during this time.
