Lock 23 - Otonabee

Trent-Severn Waterway National Historic Site

Lock 23, located on the River Road, is a quiet lock station with great boater camping opportunities along the Otonabee River shoreline. This is one of the few lock stations that permits fire pits. Boaters can access the nearby trail for those who wish to walk, jog or cycle.

Constructed: 1895 - 1898

Superintendent R.B. Rogers pioneered the use of concrete in lock construction and this lock served as a test for this design which he pronounced a success after the first winter trial. Strict attention was paid to the combination of materials making this the first concrete lock to be constructed in Canada. Lock 23 was also home to a prime example of the type of Lockmaster dwelling built during this time.
