Lock 1 - Trenton

Trent-Severn Waterway National Historic Site

Lock 1 is the first lock station on a fascinating journey from Lake Ontario through the 386 km long Trent-Severn Waterway leading to Georgian Bay. Easily accessible from Highway 401, the Loyalist Parkway and the scenic Apple Route, Lock 1 is a favourite stopping point for car travelers. Staff are available to brief new canal users on how to lock through and they will provide tips on how best to enjoy canal boating. There is good public transportation from here, making it a popular location for boaters to change over crews.

Entering off the Bay of Quinte, we welcome you to the Trent-Severn Waterway - stretching 386 km from Lake Ontario to Georgian Bay. Lock 1 is larger in size than standard locks and uses innovative wagon valves in the lock walls for more efficient dewatering. Built by the firm Larkin & Sangster, construction was complicated by the addition of a railway bridge immediately below the lock
