The project to replace the Brighton Road Swing Bridge is progressing well. The bridge has now been removed. The old north and south road abutments, as well as the centre pier have been demolished. Sheet pile has been installed as part of the north and south abutments, which will act as concrete forms and also a part of the abutment structures. The installation of micropiles, which will help to transfer the bridge load into the rock below is underway at the North abutment. Concrete pouring for the new centre pier will begin soon. The new bridge will be fabricated off-site and transported to the site in sections for re-assembly, in an effort to control quality and make the project go as quickly as possible.

The Brighton Road Swing Bridge spans the Murray Canal on County Road 64, and connects Prince Edward County and the Municipality of Quinte West. It was built in 1947 and is being replaced with a new bridge that has two full lanes, a pedestrian walkway, and full highway loading. This project is part of Parks Canada’s unprecedented $3 billion dollar investment over 5 years to support infrastructure work to heritage, visitor, waterway and highway assets located within national historic sites, national parks, and national marine conservation areas across Canada. These investments represent the largest federal infrastructure plan in the history of Parks Canada.
