Info-Work: Brighton Road Swing Bridge

Peterborough, Ontario, April 18, 2019 – Work at Parks Canada’s Brighton Road Swing Bridge on County Road 64 along the Trent-Severn Waterway National historic Site has continued over the past several weeks. Contractors are completing some remaining work and the commissioning of the new bridge for frequent summer operation. Commissioning work, including testing the bridge under various temperature conditions, as well as the completion of some concrete work, will continue until the operating season begins in mid-May.

What to expect:

• Beginning April 22 to April 26 – potential closures of up to four hours, between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.


• April 29 to May 16 - intermittent bridge swings. These swings will be shorter in length - resembling swings during the canal operating season - however may be at any time of day. This continued endurance testing is being completed to ensure the bridge’s swing ability under the strain of varied temperatures.


• May or June – closure of one lane of traffic as additional curbs and guardrails are added.

The replacement of the Brighton Road Swing Bridge is part of Parks Canada’s unprecedented $3 billion investment over 5 years to support infrastructure work to heritage, visitor, waterway, and highway assets located within national historic sites, national parks, and national marine conservation areas across Canada. These historic investments will mitigate health and safety risks, halt the deterioration of nationally significant built heritage, and stimulate the economy in communities across the country.
