Community Update: Replacement of Brighton Road Swing Bridge

With support from Public Services and Procurement Canada, and following a competitive procurement process, the construction contract to replace the Brighton Road Swing Bridge has now been awarded to Louis W. Bray Construction Limited.

With the contract now awarded, final preparations are underway and construction could begin as early as mid-September. As such, please be advised of the following:

• The Brighton Road Swing Bridge will be closed to pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicular traffic from approximately mid-September 2017 to mid-May 2018. Exact dates will follow as soon as they are known.
  
  
• The bridge station site will be enclosed with construction fencing. Thus, for the duration of the project only, the park and washroom facilities will be closed to visitor use. In addition,
  through-access of the trails along both sides of the canal will not be possible at this location.
  
  
• Construction vehicles working on the project may continue to use the bridge within the construction site to access both sides of the canal until the bridge itself is removed.
  
  
• Boat navigation will continue until the Trent-Severn Waterway closes, on October 9, 2017. The canal will be closed to boats at this site from October 10 through to mid-May. There will be no access through the Murray Canal at this location, and no mooring facilities will be available during construction.

Construction and the New Bridge

The Brighton Road Swing Bridge is to be replaced with a new two lane swing bridge that will also have a pedestrian sidewalk, a full highway load rating eliminating the current restrictions for emergency and service vehicles and upgraded mechanical and electrical features. The bridge will be fabricated off-site and transported to the site in sections for re-assembly, decreasing the length of closure. The bridge abutments and centre pier will be rehabilitated to accommodate the new bridge.

The Brighton Road Swing Bridge spans the Murray Canal on County Road 64, connecting Prince Edward County and the Municipality of Quinte West. This project is part of Parks Canada’s unprecedented $3 billion dollar investment over 5 years to support infrastructure work to heritage, visitor, waterway and highway assets located within national historic sites, national parks, and national marine conservation areas across Canada. These investments represent the largest federal infrastructure plan in the history of Parks Canada.
