Wind powered water sports

Waterton Lakes National Park

You must complete a mandatory inspection for your wind-powered watercraft.

Windsurfing and sailboarding

The beach on Upper Waterton Lake near the Townsite Campground is popular with experienced windsurfers. High, gusty winds are common. The water is cold, so drysuits or full wetsuits are recommended.

Sailboating

Beautiful waters and steady breezes make sailboating a popular recreation in Waterton. Ensure that you have the level of training and experience necessary to take responsibility for your safety. Boaters can launch their vessel from Emerald Bay or the boat launch at Linnet Lake.

Kite surfing

Kite surfers use large kites to propel themselves along the surface of the water on boards similar to wake boards. It is becoming increasingly popular on Upper Waterton Lake. Kiting conditions in Waterton can be extremely variable as the park has abnormally powerful wind gusts due to the surrounding mountainous terrain.
