Community Update: Work on Bayview Dam E and Fixed Bridge Underway

Trent-Severn Waterway National Historic Site

July 25, 2018 – Last week, the contractor for the first phase of the Port Severn Area Dams and Bridges project mobilized to site. Construction equipment and supplies can now be seen at Bayview Dam E near Port Severn Lock 45 located on the Trent-Severn Waterway National Historic Site.

From now until the end of December 2018, work will focus on the rehabilitation of Bayview Dam E and Dam C, as well as the replacement of Bayview Dam E Fixed Bridge (site map below). Parking at the Port Severn lockstation will continue to be limited during this time, as half of the parking lot is being used as the laydown area for the project.

The contractor is currently installing the cofferdam – the structure that will provide a dry work space for in-water work – immediately upstream of the dam. Once this is complete, the contractor will begin demolition efforts on Bayview Dam E first, and then Bayview Fixed Bridge and Blind Dam C in early September. After Labour Day, the public can expect a closure of Port Severn Road just before the Bayview Dam E Fixed Bridge in order to allow for its replacement. This closure will remain in place until late December 2018 when this phase of the project is expected to complete. More precise closure dates will be provided as we draw nearer to the date.

Parks Canada Investments at Port Severn

Parks Canada is making significant investments into eight assets in the Port Severn Area to ensure their preservation for generations to come. This project currently includes the rehabilitation of the Main Dam, Bayview Dam E, Little Chute Dam G, and Blind Dams A, C, and D, as well as the replacement of the Port Severn Fixed Bridge and Bayview Dam E Fixed Bridge. This project is now scheduled to conclude in 2021.

The Port Severn Area Dams and Bridges project is part of Parks Canada’s unprecedented $3 billion dollar investment over 5 years to support infrastructure work to heritage, visitor, waterway and highway assets located within national historic sites, national parks, and national marine conservation areas across Canada.
