Townsite Management

Framework for Reporting on Environmental Impacts of Townsites

In 2005-2006, Parks Canada developed a common template for community frameworks to enable park communities to monitor their progress in implementing the park vision and mandate at their sites. The results of this monitoring are used to guide decision-making. Community specific frameworks have since been developed for Field, Lake Louise, Waterton, Jasper, Banff, Wasagaming and Waskesiu. Indicators to be used to monitor progress in areas related to ecological integrity and environmental stewardship are shown in Table 26. Details of how indicators will be measured, and what performance targets will be used, continue to evolve. Ecological Integrity Action Plans have been prepared for Field, Lake Louise and Wasagaming. Such plans will be prepared for the other two Parks Canada-managed townsites in 2007-2008. The Towns of Banff and Jasper have been encouraged to prepare plans as well, in order to access ecological integrity funding for projects with impacts on adjacent park lands.
