Introduction

There are 14 planned results/priorities in the Agency Strategic Planning Framework. Summary information relating to 12 of the planned results is contained in the Agency Annual Performance Report (Departmental Performance Report).

The Agency Annual Performance Report submitted to Parliament and to Treasury Board, provides detailed performance information on the six planned results that are most critical to the delivery of the key elements of the Agency mandate and consume most of the Agency budget. This Background to the Performance Report provides detail on the other eight planned results and other additional information to help the reader understand what is involved in the work of the Agency.

In some cases, to assist in understanding the context, information from the Agency Performance report has been repeated in this document.

Additional information contained in this background document, relevant to the 2006-2007 Parks Canada Performance Report, includes:

  • Descriptions of processes and activities related to the creation of national parks, national marine conservation areas and designation of places, persons and events of national historic significance, and management planning;
  • Descriptions of objectives, roles and responsibilities and outputs of other heritage programs;
  • Descriptions of various frameworks, definitions and measures associated with Parks Canada’s measures of performance; and,
  • Supplementary performance information, providing more detail than the summary information in the 2006-2007 Parks Canada Performance Report.

Some of the information is constant from year to year (e.g., descriptions of standard processes, frameworks and measures) while other information may vary from one reporting period to the next (e.g., descriptions of activities undertaken during the year or supplementary details of information summarized in the report). This document should be read in conjunction with the Parks Canada 2006-2007 Performance Report (www.pc.gc.ca/docs/bib-lib/docs5_e.asp).
