Changes in the Number of Parks Canada Administered National Historic Sites
Many of the Parks Canada sites were acquired through their transfer to Parks Canada from other federal departments, when a property was of national historic significance but no longer required for operational purposes by the original department. A number of sites have been acquired specifically to address thematic gaps, as identified in the applicable system plan. Individual citizens, heritage agencies, corporations, federal government departments or other levels of government own the national historic sites not administered by Parks Canada. Changes in the number of Parks Canada administered national historic sites over the last three years are shown in Table 9.
