Establish Heritage Places

Changes in the Number of Parks Canada Administered National Historic Sites

Many of the Parks Canada sites were acquired through their transfer to Parks Canada from other federal departments, when a property was of national historic significance but no longer required for operational purposes by the original department. A number of sites have been acquired specifically to address thematic gaps, as identified in the applicable system plan. Individual citizens, heritage agencies, corporations, federal government departments or other levels of government own the national historic sites not administered by Parks Canada. Changes in the number of Parks Canada administered national historic sites over the last three years are shown in Table 9.

  • Net Adjustments reflect the addition of newly designated sites to the Parks Canada inventory of administered sites (e.g., The Status of Designations Committee of the HSMBC, which lead to the addition of Royal Battery National Historic Site and Wolfe’s Landing National Historic Site, both within the boundaries of Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site, to the list of Parks Canada's national historic sites.
