Conserve Heritage Resources
Survey of Other Owners of National Historic Sites
In 2004-2005, Parks Canada commissioned a survey of other owners of national historic sites to collect benchmark information about how owners manage sites, their experiences with Parks Canada services, and their orientation and practices as they relate to CI. Parks Canada expects to repeat the survey process on a 2 to 3 year cycle in order to track the extent of awareness and of access to information.
Of those surveyed:
- 46% reported they were aware of the term commemorative integrity, and,
- Almost two-thirds of respondents (64%) indicated that they currently have access to information on best practices for preserving, presenting or managing a national historic site. Parks Canada is an important source of this information.
In 2006-2007, Parks Canada began a project to review and strengthen the Agency’s relationship with the family of national historic sites. This review includes a needs analysis for other owners of national historic sites, work that will be tied in to the follow-up survey in 2007-2008.
Protection and preservation of Canada’s built cultural heritage is not something that Parks Canada can do alone. The task requires a collaborative effort from all parties. Parks Canada as a recognized leader in the field can influence, inform and facilitate.
