2. Select an NMCA Proposal |
Atlantic 7 - Laurentian Channel and Great Lakes 4 - Lake Erie: The selection of the preferred area for national marine conservation area purposes has been advanced by means of ongoing work on the selection report for this marine region and initial discussions have been held with the provincial government. |

3. Feasibility Study\Interim Management Planning |
Pacific 1 and 2 - Hecate Strait and Queen Charlotte Shelf (Gwaii Haanas):A 1988 federal-provincial agreement contains a commitment to establish a national marine conservation area to represent Pacific marine regions 1 and 2. While all the steps under the agreement have been completed, passage of the CNMCA Act added a new step: development of an interim management plan. Progress was made with the Council of the Haida Nation to permit the Interim Management Planning process to proceed. The negotiation of a new agreement between the Council of the Haida Nation and the Government of Canada for the management and operation of the NMCA is also being discussed. |
Pacific 5 - Strait of Georgia |
Atlantic 6 - Magdalen Shallows (Îles de la Madeleine):Parks Canada continues to seek the support and participation of the Quebec government in a feasibility study. Several Îles de la Madeleine organizations and groups have nominated members to an advisory committee to assist with the study. Representatives of the provincial government and interested federal departments continued to be briefed on the project. |

4. Consultations and Negotiations |
Great Lakes 1 - Lake Superior: Parks Canada and the government of Ontario made significant progress to complete a final establishment agreement. The Agency and Northern Superior Chiefs signed a protocol agreement that led to a shared understanding of their role in the planning and management of the NMCA. |
