Rouge National Urban Park

Immerse yourself in a wide variety of opportunities that may not be available to a regular visitor, such as leading guided walks, restoring ecosystems, photographing wildlife, cleaning up litter, attending community events and so much more.

Volunteer photographer

Commitment: Six times per year

Our team of volunteer photographers are always on the lookout for the best nature, agriculture, landscape and visitor shots. Volunteers are encouraged to develop their photography portfolios, and will be provided with opportunities to document a variety of park subjects, including people, nature and wildlife. Volunteer photographers take photographs at Parks Canada events, out on the trails, or anywhere in the park they can get good photos to capture what it means to be in Canada's first national urban park! Volunteer photographs may be used to help support online and print publications, as well as outreach exhibits and display materials.

Volunteer guided walk leader

Commitment: Once a month, year round

Rouge National Urban Park's guided walk leaders are Ontario Heritage Trust award winners and consistently garner tremendous visitor feedback. Walk leaders take on the dual task of practically leading visitors on park trails while applying a specific interpretive theme to the outing. Walk leaders lead one guided walk a month (a one year commitment is required), on their own or with a co-leader on a 1.5 to 2.5 hour walk. Walk leaders pick a theme and discuss this theme throughout their walk (eg. biodiversity, history of the Rouge, farming, etc.)

Volunteer environmental monitor

Commitment: Seasonal

Work with our team of ecologists and help survey a variety of plants and animals that call Rouge National Urban Park home. Volunteer duties include various activities such as monitoring for birds and frogs during the early morning hours to observing bat roosts at sundown to record population estimates. Candidates with a background and/or interest in environmental sciences and biology or natural history are welcome to apply.

Stewardship volunteer

Commitment: Once a month

Are you looking for an opportunity to nurture nature, get outdoors and make a difference in the park? Consider joining the Stewardship Squad! You’ll get the chance to clean-up the park, remove harmful invasive plants and create wildlife habitat through tree and shrub plantings. Become a member and celebrate your accomplishments with your squad! Candidates that enjoy working as part of a team and being active are encouraged to apply.
