Visit the Tablelands - A drive through Trout River Gulch

Enjoy views and short excursions onto the most alien of Gros Morne’s mountains. The Tablelands is huge, orange, a slab of the Earth’s mantle, and inhospitable to most plants.

• The Tablelands and Green Gardens trails provide opportunities for short excursions onto this alien landscape.

Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse – Coastal headlands and heritage

From this coastal headland enjoy coastal vistas, sunsets, or go inside the century old home of the lightkeeper, which hosts an exhibit highlighting the heritage of the area.

• Exhibit is on one level and contains a mix of historical photos and videos, audio recordings, artifacts, and exhibit panels. Interpretive panels along main pathways.
• Main pathways have little to no slope but surfaces are uneven in places.
• Doors to exhibit are narrow (750 mm)
• Washrooms equipped with mobility accessible features.

Explore the Trails - Adaptive hiking equipment

Looking to get out on the trails? The park has 4 types of non-motorized all-terrain mobility devices available. Park staff can make recommendations that best fit your abilities and interests.

• What is available:
  • Cascade Tandem Hiking Cart
  • Grit Freedom Chair
  • Hippocampe All-terrain Wheelchair
  • Debug Beach Wheelchair
• Equipment available free of charge, advanced reservation required (709-458-2417).
• Users are responsible to transport the equipment from pick-up location to their chosen destinations in the park.
• All equipment can be disassembled or folded to fit into the trunk of a car. 

Landscape and seasonality

Gros Morne National Park has a diverse landscape of steep mountainous terrain, rolling hills, flat coastal lowlands, and 270 kilometres of coastline with beaches and cliffs. Front country facilities and trails are generally snow free during the main operating season between the May long weekend and the Thanksgiving weekend in October. Several adjacent communities provide additional visitor services. Visitors should plan and book early for campsites or accommodation. Contact the Visitor Centre (709-458-2417) in fall, winter and spring to find out what areas are free of snow.  

How to get around here

Gros Morne National Park is a large park (1805 km²) with visitor interest sites spread throughout the park. There is limited public transportation. A car is essential for travel between most sites.  

Accessible toilets

The washrooms listed here offer mobility‑related accessibility features. While these facilities may not meet all accessibility standards, they include features that can assist many visitors. This information is provided to help visitors plan their visit but does not guarantee that a washroom will meet the needs of all users. At a minimum, all washrooms listed here have the following features:

• Doorways wider than 830 mm (unless other wise noted)
• Doorway thresholds lower than 25 mm
• Horizontal grab bars

Highway 430: Between the park entrance (Wiltondale) to Shallow Bay:

• Mill Brook Day Use Area: one single user all-gendered flush toilet; clear floor space 2100 mm x 1600 mm; baby changing station; 24 hour access
• Gros Morne Visitor Centre (Rocky Harbour):
  • two single user all-gendered flush toilets; clear floor space 1700 mm x 1700 mm; power operated doors; baby changing station; access during operating hours only
  • one single user all-gendered flush toilet; clear floor space 1600 mm x 1500 mm; power operated door; exterior door for 24 hour access
• Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse: separate male and female washrooms with accessible stall (1800 mm x 1760 mm); Note: stall door 775 mm wide; clear floor space 2000 mm x 2100 mm; pathway to washroom building is uneven; 24 hour access
• Berry Hill Campground: separate male and female washrooms with accessible stall (1540 mm x 1450 mm); clear floor space 2000 mm x 2100 mm; Minimal clear space at doorway may limit access. Assistance may be required to open doors and maneuver into the washroom. 24 hour access
• Green Point Campground: flush toilets in separate male and female washrooms with one designated accessible stall; male stall (1670 mm x 1680 mm); female stall (1530 mm x 1510 mm); pathway to washroom building is uneven; 24 hour access
• Western Brook Pond Trail Head/Parking Lot: two single user all-gendered flush toilets; clear floor space 1700 mm x 1900 mm; no interior lighting – natural lighting only; 24 hour access
• Western Brook Pond Boat Tour Dockside: one single user all-gendered flush toilet; clear floor space 1500 mm x 1500 mm; access during operating hours only
• Western Brook Day Use Area: one single user all-gendered pit toilet; clear floor space 2100 mm x 2100 mm; no interior lighting – natural lighting only; 24 hour access
• Shallow Bay Campground: one single user all-gendered flush toilet; clear floor space 2100 mm x 2100 mm; 24 hour access

Highway 431: Between Park Entrance (Lomond) and Trout River Campground:

• Lomond Campground and Day Use Area: two accessible washrooms; non-gendered; Path to washrooms exceeds 5% slope, assistance may be required; 24 hour access. 
• Gros Morne Discovery Centre (Woody Point): separate male and female washrooms with accessible stalls in each; Minimal clear space at doorway may limit access. Assistance may be required to open doors and maneuver into the washroom. Access during operating hours only.
• Trout River Pond Campground: one accessible washroom; non-gendered; 24 hour access.

Notes:

• Washrooms in campgrounds are for registered campers. If not camping, please register with park staff at the campground entrance.
• Not all washrooms will be available in the early or late part of the operation season. In spring and fall, contact the Visitor Centre (709-458-2417) for up-to-date information.
