Info-Work: Boundary Road Swing Bridge Construction Update

Trent-Severn Waterway National Historic Site

April 21, 2022, Peterborough, Ontario – .Parks Canada would like to advise that the Agency intends to retain a new Contractor to complete the replacement of the Boundary Road Swing Bridge. Initial planning is underway. Intentions are for work to recommence within the next year.

This project will pose no impacts to the navigation season but Simcoe Street will remain closed at the bridge site to vehicle and pedestrian traffic until the bridge replacement project is complete. Residents and visitors are advised to follow the detour signage.

Parks Canada makes every reasonable effort to adhere to planned schedules and to minimize impacts on residents and visitors. However, it is important to note that the complexities of the contracting associated with the previous contract combined with the fact that all construction projects are currently subject to supply chain constraints that are beyond the control of the project team, could result in delays to project completion.

The initial Boundary Road Swing Bridge construction contract was initiated in June 2020 with the bridge being closed in January 2021 The work was paused in October of the 2021 when the work was removed from the Contractor’s hands for lack of performance. Work completed to date includes demolition of the old steel superstructure and its removal from site, as well as some demolition of the supporting concrete abutments. The continuation of work will see the completion of concrete pier and abutment rehabilitation and installation of a new steel superstructure along with modernized mechanical systems and improvements to roadway approaches.

Parks Canada is leading this important infrastructure work to ensure safe, high-quality experiences for visitors by improving heritage, visitor, waterway, and highway assets located within national historic sites, national parks, and national marine conservation areas, including along the Trent-Severn Waterway National Historic Site.
