Be prepared for bugs
Wood Buffalo National Park
Northern Canada welcomes adventure seekers to experience boundless skies, ancient boreal forests and grand herds of bison. The welcoming party also features a significant number of biting insects – a reality of any thriving boreal ecosystem.
When adventuring in the wilderness of Wood Buffalo National Park, visitors should be prepared for the presence of mosquitoes and other flying insects, especially during the warmer months. These insects are most active from late spring through summer, particularly in areas near wetlands or water, and during dawn and dusk.
To enhance your comfort and enjoyment:
- Wear appropriate clothing: Opt for long-sleeved shirts and long pants in light colors to reduce exposure. Layer clothing where possible.
- Use insect repellent: Apply repellents containing DEET or other effective ingredients to exposed skin and clothing.
- Consider protective gear: Items like head nets can provide additional protection
- Plan activities wisely: Engage in outdoor activities during times when insect activity is lower, typically midday.
- Plan your visitation dates. In the early spring and late summer, when overnight frost is happening, the flying insect count drops. The brisker the evening air, the better sleep you get and fewer flying insects show up the next day
By taking these precautions, you can fully appreciate the natural beauty and serenity of Canada's northern landscapes.
