The Tent Dwellers

This campsite is named after the book The Tent Dwellers (1908), a humorous account of two American adventurers, Eddie Breck and Albert Bigelow Paine, who embarked on a canoeing and fishing trip with local guides Del the Stout and Charles the Strong. Their journey began right here at Jakes Landing.

The wilderness will welcome you, and teach you, and take you to its heart. And you will find your own soul there; and the discovery will be worth while!

Albert Bigelow Paine, The Tent Dwellers, 1908

Remarkably, over 100 years later, the wilderness they explored remains largely untouched and wild, offering you a chance to experience the same natural beauty and tranquility.

The book is available for purchase at the By the Mersey gift shop in the Visitor Centre.
