Lachine Canal National Historic Site

Interpretation displays and industry memorial

Starting at Lock No. 1 in the Old Port of Montreal, follow history along the canal and the industry which dominated the surrounding area for more than a century will be revealed to you.


How the locks operate

Close to the Maison des Éclusiers (lock keeper's house), you can familiarise yourself with the lockage while discovering the spectacular site of the number 1 and number 2 locks.

The local interpretive panels are a great occasion for cyclists and pedestrians to learn about the history of the Lachine canal.


The Fur Trade at Lachine National Historic Site

Just steps from the Lachine Canal, relive one of the most exciting episodes in Canadian history in an old fur warehouse built in 1803. As you browse around the pelt bales, cases of goods and barrels of provisions you will discover all the ins and outs of a trade that has long been the main economic motor of the country. This fun-filled, interactive exhibition will charm both young and old alike.
