Artillery Storehouse and Forge

Do you see the fleur de lis atop each building around you? These are the King’s buildings, for you have entered an entire block set aside to serve the needs of the garrison and the royal administration. Royal buildings bear the fleur de lis, but their slate roofs and cutstone detailing also distinguish them from most private structures.

The first building on your right is the artillery hangar, which includes a forge at the far end behind a partition wall. The storehouse was completed in 1736 but its slate roof often leaked — look for the drain running down the middle of the dirt floor.

The gunners stored and tended their cannon and carriages here. Cannon were not fixed permanently on their platforms for they were wheeled. Despite their great weight, they could soon be hauled where they were needed most. You will find more ramps than steps on the defences.
