The golden north

 

The rich farmland in the northern area of Rouge National Urban Park offers a bountiful taste of the season. Take a drive by golden crop fields and visit local produce stands, markets and pick-your-own experiences run by the farms located right here in the park.

Harvest Trail

Golden fields and gentle streams

Duration: Approx. 2–3 hours

Best for: Nature lovers, casual walkers, photographers

Parking: 19th Avenue Day Use Area

Start: Begin your walk at the 19th Avenue Day Use Area and head south along Harvest Trail, a scenic route that winds through restored meadows and open fields. This section of the park offers a peaceful setting with wide open views and seasonal colours.

Highlights:
  • See if you can catch a glimpse of the CN tower at the start of your walk
  • Quiet meadows and shaded woodlots
  • Gently rolling terrain, ideal for a relaxed walk
  • Pause at the armorstone seating grove, a great spot to take in your surroundings
  • Opportunities to spot birds, butterflies and late-season wildflowers
  • Alternatively, you may choose to begin the walk at Black Walnut Day Use Area and take Harvest Trail north

Optional: Before or after your walk, take a drive by the golden crop fields nearby and visit a local farm stand along 19th Avenue or Elgin Mills Road. Many offer fresh seasonal produce, fall treats and pick-your-own experiences, perfect for rounding out your visit with a taste of the season.

Northeast Trail

Sugar maple walk

Duration: Approx. 2–3 hours

Best for: Nature lovers, casual walkers, fall colour seekers

Parking: Northeast Trailhead – Sideline 30 Parking Lot

Start: Begin your walk at the Northeast Trailhead on Sideline 30 and head south along Northeast Trail, a quiet route that winds through meadows and woodlands. Before long, you’ll find yourself passing through a beautiful sugar maple forest, which is especially vibrant in the fall.

Highlights:
  • Colourful sugar maple canopy provides a perfect snapshot of the changing seasons
  • Peaceful forest and meadow transitions
  • Creek crossings and restored wetland views
  • Benches and rest spots along the trail

Optional: For a shorter outing, turn around at Concession Road 9. For a longer excursion, continue south to Black Walnut Day Use Area and enjoy the boardwalks and pergola seating area.

Meadows and streams

Take a relaxing walk through the park’s open meadows, where tall grass moves with the breeze and gentle streams wind through the vast landscape. These quiet areas are great for spotting birds, insects and other small wildlife. Whether you're out for a short stroll or a longer hike, the calm surroundings offer a peaceful way to enjoy the season.

Central Trail

Creekside stroll

Best for: Casual walkers, nature lovers, bird watchers

Parking: Black Walnut Day Use Area

Start: Begin your walk at the Black Walnut Day Use Area and head south along Central Trail, a peaceful route that follows creeks and streams through meadows and forested areas. This section of the trail offers a mix of shaded paths and open views, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy fall colours and quiet nature moments.

  • Creekside walking with gentle water sounds
  • Scenic pond along the trail
  • Restored meadows and forest edges
  • Opportunities to spot birds, squirrels, and late-season blooms
  • Benches and rest areas along the way

Wonderful wildlife

Fall is a uniquely vibrant time for nature observation. Watch yellow warblers migrate south, enjoy purple asters in bloom and spot colourful mushrooms as the trail bursts with fungal diversity. While enjoying fall colours, utilize the iNaturalist app to identify your finds and support nature research in the park.

Pergola on Northeast Trail

Wonderful wildlife watch

Duration: Approx. 2–3 hours

Best for: Families, casual walkers, nature lovers

Parking: Black Walnut Day Use Area

Start: Begin your walk at the Black Walnut Day Use Area and walk along Northeast Trail, a scenic route that passes through wetlands, meadows, and forested areas. This section of the park is especially vibrant in the fall, offering a mix of open views and shaded paths ideal for spotting seasonal wildlife.

Highlights:
  • Boardwalks crossing marshland, observing frogs and birds as you go
  • Pergola seating area with views of restored wetlands and migrating species
  • Peaceful forest canopy and open meadow sections, perfect for quiet observation
  • Gently rolling terrain with benches for resting and wildlife watching

Optional: Pack a snack or lunch to enjoy at the pergola or one of the benches along the trail. On your way home, consider stopping at a nearby farm stand on Reesor Road or 19th Avenue for fresh produce and fall treats.
