HMS Investigator

Aulavik National Park

In 1850, HMS Investigator set out as part of the naval search for the Franklin Expedition, they discovered the Northwest Passage but not the missing expedition. The ship was trapped in the ice of Mercy Bay with it’s crew for a few years before the survivors were rescued in 1853. The Investigator was abandoned and its resting place unknown until being located by Parks Canada in 2010. Along the shores of Mercy Bay important cultural sites, such as McClure's cache, are protected by Parks Canada.
