Start your trip at the Visitor Centre

The Visitor Center is open May to September and is the first stop on your visit to Fort Walsh National Historic Site. Helpful Parks Canada staff members can provide you with up-to-date information on events, programs, and much more!

  • The Visitor Centre has accessible parking spaces closer to the entrance than in the regular parking lot which is located uphill from the visitor centre.
  • 2 designated parking spots are located closer to the building.
  • Paths connect the Visitor Centre to the grounds and historic buildings, and visitors can walk down the paved road to the historic buildings, though there is a steep incline. Shuttle service is available from the Visitor Centre to the Fort.

Museum

View and learn about the unique collection of artifacts depicting early First Nations presence in the Cypress Hills, as well as the role of the early North West Mounted Police.

Located inside the Visitor Centre, the museum has displays featuring bilingual panels and larger walkways for maneuvering wheelchairs, strollers, and other assistance devices.

Landscape and seasonality

Fort Walsh is in a prairie environment. There is generally no snow from June to September, but be prepared for rain or high temperatures in summer.

Washrooms

Visitor Centre:

There are several wheelchair paved parking spaces located close to the entrance to the visitor centre.

Inside the visitor centre, there are two gendered multi-stall washrooms, including an accessible stall in each, as well as an accessible family washroom.

Inside the Fort:

There are accessible washrooms available inside the Fort. The washroom building is accessed via a wooden ramp.

The following equipment is available for loan for free at Fort Walsh.

All-Terrain Wheelchairs

Two all-terrain wheelchairs are available to borrow to use on site.

Free entry for support persons

Parks Canada offers free admission and access to programs for support persons travelling with a visitor who has a disability and depends on the support person to travel and experience a Parks Canada destination.

Support people may be family members, friends or aides from an external organization.

Many people with disabilities are independent and may make use of assistance from travelling companions but are not dependent upon it, in which case regular fees are applied.
