Community Update: Contractor Mobilizing to Site

Rideau Canal National Historic Site

Scaffolding inside of Edmond's Lock
Inside the Hoarding at Edmonds Lock 25 - 2016

December 15, 2017 –
The contractor for the Edmonds Lock 25 and Weir rehabilitation is now mobilizing to site. Once the site is set up, they will begin historic stone masonry repairs to these assets throughout the winter months, completing in spring 2018.

Mobilizing to the Edmonds site includes the installation of site trailers, fencing around the work area, and the creation of a temporary access road to the assets that require repair. Since work will be happening throughout the winter, the contractor will install scaffolding with hoarding – a weatherproof enclosure – that can be heated to maintain an adequate temperature for the work. Inside the hoarding must be warm enough to allow the grout and mortar to cure, as well as provide a safe work environment for the project staff.

The Edmonds Lock 25 and Weir rehabilitation involves historic masonry which includes grouting, repointing and stone replacement on both the lock and weir. Construction efforts will focus on lock repairs during the 2017-18 non-navigation season, followed by work on the weir in 2018-19. The full project is expected to be completed in spring 2019.

About Edmonds Lock 25, Dam and Weir

Edmonds Lock, Dam and Weir were constructed in the late 1820s to early 1830s. The lock was created with a 2.64 metre (eight foot, eight inch) lift, built on a clay foundation and wooden floor. A stone arch overflow dam was built with a weir, installed to reduce the chance of floods. In the early 1840s, a stone lockmaster's house was constructed at the site then replaced with a two-storey house in 1905.
