School Programs

Your group follows a personalized tour of the site with a Parks Canada guide and then explores the site on an 18th-century treasure hunt. Who in your group will be first to solve the mysteries?

Along with the human inhabitants of 18th century Louisbourg, many animals have resided in the barns, grassy areas and historic features at Fortress of Louisbourg. Come and learn about the Species at Risk who call Louisbourg home, and find out what Parks Canada is doing, and what you can do to help protect them!

This hands-on exploration gives students a fun opportunity to handle everyday objects from the past and to guess what they are and what they were used for. You'll be surprised at the interesting and useful things that people used in the old days.

Give the students what they really want- use of their mobile devices! Download the Compass/ GPS/ or Geocaching app of your choice prior to your visit (make sure it has latitude and longitude coordinates on it). On arrival, the students will learn about the people who navigated their way to this multicultural town in the 18th century, and will then have to find their way around the reconstructed site to the hidden caches each containing a story about the cultures represented in Louisbourg in the 1700’s.

This program begins with a tour of the Fortress of Louisbourg archaeological collection with an expert from our Cultural Resources team. After exploring the collection of 300-year-old items, and learning why these resources are so critical to our cultural heritage in Canada, the program will shift to the reconstructed site for a Scavenger Hunt of reproduced items currently on display in our exhibits and period spaces.

Modern tents and ground mats are available to set up in the King’s Bastion courtyard.

The Soldiers’ Barracks

A night in the barracks where the soldiers once lived provides participants a first-hand experience of the challenging living conditions of 18th century Louisbourg.
Capacity: maximum of 44 people; possibility of 2 ppl. /bed

Ghost Tour

There is no shortage of ghost stories at the Fortress of Louisbourg. Hear some of them as you are guided by only the light of a lantern. A unique experience that you will not forget!
