Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site
Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site welcomes school groups of all ages during shoulder and peak seasons. Several options are available for schools and teachers including enhanced guided programs.
Parks Canada is pleased to offer a selection of educational programs at Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site that will suit the interests and curriculum needs of all school grade levels.

Enhanced guided experiences
Our team at the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site is pleased to engage students through cultural and natural interpretive programming. Please see below for a brief description of the programs offered.
Guided tour and treasure hunt
Your group follows a personalized tour of the site with a Parks Canada guide and then explores the site on an 18th-century treasure hunt. Who in your group will be first to solve the mysteries?

Species at risk at Fortress of Louisbourg
Along with the human inhabitants of 18th century Louisbourg, many animals have resided in the barns, grassy areas and historic features at Fortress of Louisbourg. Come and learn about the Species at Risk who call Louisbourg home, and find out what Parks Canada is doing, and what you can do to help protect them!

Name that thing
This hands-on exploration gives students a fun opportunity to handle everyday objects from the past and to guess what they are and what they were used for. You'll be surprised at the interesting and useful things that people used in the old days.

Culture caches
Students will learn about the people who navigated their way to this multicultural town in the 18th century, and will have to find their own way around the reconstructed site to the hidden caches, each containing a story about the cultures represented in Louisbourg in the 1700s.

Journey through the past
Examine 300-year-old artifacts from the Fortress of Louisbourg archaeological collection. This hands-on experience brings the past into the present as the students are able to touch and feel items from another era. Students will then be challenged to find reproduced items currently on display in our exhibits and period spaces.

Grades: suitable for grades 6 to 12
Youth overnight experiences
Overnight experiences for students and youth groups are available at the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site. Spend your evening exploring the stars, listening to haunted stories, or learn about 18th-century camping.
Accommodations
21st Century Camping
Modern tents and ground mats are available to set up in the King’s Bastion courtyard.
Capacity: maximum of 90 people -- 14 four-person tents & 14 six-person tents; 95 floor mats
The Soldiers’ Barracks
A night in the barracks where the soldiers once lived provides participants a first-hand experience of the challenging living conditions of 18th century Louisbourg.
Capacity: maximum of 44 people; possibility of 2 ppl. /bed

Ghost Tour
There is no shortage of ghost stories at the Fortress of Louisbourg. Hear some of them as you are guided by only the light of a lantern. A unique experience that you will not forget!

Dark sky kits
Discover the planets and stars at the location of the first observatory in Canada, built in Louisbourg in 1750. The kit comes with binoculars, star charts, and more tools to help enjoy the dark skies
