Shallow Bay Campground– Detailed Accessibility Information
The following descriptions and photos are intended to offer additional details for trip planning that may be needed by people with disabilities. These facilities and experiences may not meet the needs of all people or be compliant with all standards. Terrain
Shallow Bay campground is a combination of open and forested sites with mostly level terrain. The campground’s roads are a combination of compacted gravel (firm) and pavement (very firm). Campsites are a combination of compacted gravel (firm) and natural soil and grassy areas (semi-firm).
Campsites
Serviced site (#17) – level with grassy surfaces (semi-firm) and has water and electrical hook ups.
- Distance to washrooms is 50 metres.
- Standard picnic table provided.
- Ground around fire pits may be softer and more uneven.
- Access to the service post for water and electricity may be limited due to uneven ground and space restrictions.
Unserviced sites (#18 - #20) – level with grassy surfaces (semi-firm).
- Distance to washrooms:
- Site 18 = 55 m
- Site 19 = 65 m
- Site 20 = 70 m
- Standard picnic table provided.
- Ground around fire pits may be softer and more uneven.
Cabin site (#16) – The cabin has 10 x 14 feet of interior space, with an additional 5 foot covered porch of exterior space. The site is level with grassy (semi-firm) and compacted gravel (firm) surfaces.
- Distance to washrooms: 70 m (Note: There is no running water in the cabin.)
- Access to the cabin is by a wooden ramp and a door with a width of 845 mm.
- Cabin is equipped with heat, lights and an electrical outlet.
- Furnishings include double bed with mattress, one small sofa bed, and table with four chairs.
- Accessible picnic table provided.
- Ground around fire pits may be softer and more uneven.
Washrooms
One any gender bathroom with toilet and roll-in shower.
- Clear door width of 800 mm and interior clear turning space of 2100 mm x 2100 mm.
- Shower stall equipped with grab bars, fold-down shower seat, and handheld showerhead.
Kitchen Shelter
Attached to washroom building and accessible via same pathways.
- Smooth painted concrete floor. May be slippery when wet.
- Standard height sink and counter.
- Standard picnic tables.
Playground
A playground is located near the kitchen shelter.
- The playground is equipped with a variety of equipment providing an opportunity for a range of play activities.
- The playground surface is pea gravel (soft).
Beach
A 4 km long saltwater sandy beach can be accessed from the campground. The beach provides opportunities for swimming, sunbathing, kayaking, and exploring.
- Wooden bridge provides access across the sand dunes.
- A beach access mat will be installed for summer 2026.
- A beach wheelchair is available for loan. Contact campground staff.
Old Mail Road
A sheltered forested trail connecting Shallow Bay campground and the day use area. At either end of the trail there are dune crossings that provide access to the beach.
- Sections of trail may be soft or become muddy after rain.
- Occasional exposed tree roots up to 40 mm above trail surface.
Length: 1.2 km (one-way)
Surface: A combination of compacted gravel, packed natural soils, and grassy sections. (Semi-firm)
Width: 1.6 to 1.8 m
Minimum width: 1.4 m
Elevation Gain: 0 m
Slope: Flat. All slopes <5%

Circulation Routes
From campsites and Cabin 16, access to washrooms, kitchen shelter, playground, Old Mail Road and beach is by way of a single continuous path.
Campsite #17 and cabin #16 to washroom/kitchen shelter building

- Site #17: 60 metres
- Cabin #16SB: 70 metres
Surface:
- Paved road, packed gravel, and grassy sections (Firm)
- In part shared vehicle route (Max 10 km/h)
- Slope: Average: < 5%; maximum 10%
- Minimum width: >1600 mm
Obstacles:
- No lighting along route.
- Transitions may be uneven or eroded.
Campsite #18 - #20 to washroom/kitchen shelter building
Distance:
- Site #18: 55 metres
- Site #19: 65 metres
- Site #20: 70 metres
Surface:
- Paved road and packed gravel (Firm)
- In part shared vehicle route (Max 10 km/h)
- Slope: Average: < 5%
- Minimum width: >1600 mm
Obstacles:
- No lighting along route.
- Transitions between gravel pathway and door ramps may be uneven or eroded.
Washroom/Kitchen Shelter Building to Playground and Old Mail Road
Distance:30 m
- Surface: Packed gravel and grassy area (Firm)
- Slope: Average: < 5%
- Minimum width: >1600 mm
Playground to Beach
- Distance:160 m
- Surface: Wooden bridge, packed natural soil, grassy area, and beach mat (Semi-firm)
- Slope: Average: < 5%, up to 10%
- Minimum width: 900 mm
Obstacles:
- Packed natural soil may be muddy after rain.
- 8-10 % slope over 25 m where bridge descends to the beach.
- 1700 mm x 1600 mm clear turning space on bridge where it turns to descend to the beach.
Items of Note:
The campground has reliable cell service. Wifi is available at kitchen shelter.
