Jean-Alexis Lemoine, dit Monière

Born in 1680 in the Trois-Rivières region, Montière spent his youth making trading trips in teh West on behalf of the greatest fur traders. Due to his savings, his reputation in the community and his family relationships, he himself became a respectable Montréal outfiter*.

Well established in the legal fur market, Monière also engaged in smuggling. He sold part of his pelts to the Albany merchants at a very competitive price. Upon his death in 1754, his son Pierre-Alexis took over his father's business.

* Outfitter: Merchant who hired a team of paddlers, prided them with canoes, food, ammunitions and trade goods to do fur.
