Stewardship and management

Built between 1830 and 1837, the building’s neoclassical construction has a cut stone façade at each end with lateral walls of irregular stone. Requisitioned by the British Army who arrived to put down the 1837 Patriote Rebellion, the building remained a barracks until 1840 when it was transformed into a hotel, welcoming passengers from steamboats stopping at Carillon. Since 1940, the former barracks have housed the Argenteuil Regional Museum and it has been a national historic site since 1960.

Entering the museum, you will be treated to a wide span of history. More than 10,000 objects are testimonials to the daily lives of Aboriginal, French, British, Quebec and Canadian communities. See the striking landscape surrounding the imposing structure and picture yourself on the Ottawa River on a steamship that would surely have been the envy of Dollard des Ormeaux and his companions.
