Self-guided tour

York Redoubt National Historic Site

Cannons once protected the port of Halifax.

York Redoubt enjoys a spectacular vantage point over the opening of the channel that flows into Halifax Harbour. This is precisely why the British chose this location to construct one of the batteries to protect the area from the French.

Exploring fortifications that are over 200 years old, transport yourself back in time to 1793 and imagine being one of the first soldiers who stood guard from this point. The powerful guns on site give a sense of the fire power that York Redoubt was capable of using if challenged.

The interpretive panels around the location help to explain what you are discovering.

Prepare to spend most of your visit outside and dress appropriately for the season.
