Geocaching

L'Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site

Geocaching is a modern treasure hunt – a new sport that is growing in popularity with people of all ages. Given the latitudinal and longitudinal co-ordinates, participants use their GPS (Global Positioning System) unit to locate the hidden “cache,” a small box with a punch to record their visit on the program card.

For the first time ever, L’Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site is pleased to offer you an official geocaching challenge.

The Exploring Straumfjörð Geocache Challenge

This a traditional geocache, in which coordinates are given for the exact location of each cache. This geocache challenge can be completed comfortably in one day. Visitors can purchase a program card at visitor reception and search for the caches during their visit to earn the geocoin unique to this site. To complete the challenge, participants will be required to visit at least 4 of the 5 hidden caches. Geocachers who prove they have visited at least 4 caches will earn the limited-edition tractable site geocoin. Visit Port aux Choix and Red Bay National Historic Sites to collect all three coins in the series.

To participate, here's what you need to do:

  • Join www.geocaching.com, the global GPS caching website.
  • Use either a GPS or Smartphone to download the geocaching app.
  • Obtain all the co-ordinates for the geocaches from geocaching.com.
  • Purchase your geocaching card at the site.
  • Use your device to find the caches.
  • Imprint your card with the punch unique to that cache.
  • Bring your completed card to the site reception desk to claim your geocoin.
  • You must have a valid day entry for the site.
