Nááts'įhch'oh National Park Reserve
Parks Canada, with the help of the Nááts’įhch’oh National Park Reserve Management Committee, has developed a series of monitoring programs that track species, ecosystems, and physical conditions. Because the park was created in 2012, and legislated in 2014,recent results from field activities continue to assist in streamlining protocols, refining monitoring objectives, and selecting the best long-term indicators.
Field monitoring in this park requires innovative strategies to overcome challenges that arise because of its remote location, harsh winter weather, and the potential for wildlife to damage equipment left in the field. Parks Canada makes use of different devices that are programmed to collect data on a year-round basis. These include wildlife cameras, water depth loggers, birdsong recorders, and soil temperature loggers. They each have strong anchoring systems and a long battery life, allowing them to gather data between annual servicing visits.
