  • Snow Day - Winter Carnival

    Winter is calling at Kouchibouguac National Park. Join us on February 21, 2026, for the Snow Day Winter Carnival, a full day of fun filled winter activities for all ages.

    The Pijeboogwek shelter will serve as the hub and meeting point for all activities.

    Tuesday, February 17

    18:30 - Respectful Returns: A Panel Discussion on the State of the Atlantic Salmon and the Freshwater Ecosystem in and around Kouchibouguac National Park

    Join us for this panel discussion organized by Kouchibouguac National Park (KNP) and the New Brunswick Environmental Network (NBEN). How is our freshwater ecosystem doing? Our rivers and streams? What challenges are they facing? What are the possible solutions? How can I better manage the river bank on my property? How does the state of our waterways affect the Atlantic Salmon? What efforts are being made to protect this important species?

    David Mazerolle, Ecosystem Scientist at KNP, and Kurt Samways, Parks Canada Research Chair in aquatic ecosystems at the University of New Brunswick, Wendy Narvey, Director of Fisheries at Mi’gmawe’l Tplu’taqnn Inc., will address the subject and answer your questions. Daniel Gallant, Ecologist at KNP, will be the moderator.

    This is a bilingual hybrid event with simultaneous translation available. Virtual or face to face participation is offered at the Visitor Information Center Theater. In person participants are invited to arrive early to explore the birch bark canoe exhibit and permanent exhibits.

    Saturday, February 21

    10:00 - Cross country skiing friendly relay race

    Friendly relay race with three different circuits for three age groups. Presented by Ski Codiac Cross Country Ski Club.

    11:00 - Walking in a winter wonderland

    Snowshoe walk to discover the winter wilderness of Kouchibouguac National Park with two Parks Canada ecologists.

    11:00 to 14:00 - Wabanaki Food Truck

    The Wabanaki Food Truck will be on site offering traditional Indigenous cuisine.

    11:00 - Music around the fire

    Enjoy traditional East Coast music performed by brother sister duo Nathanael and Naomi Buschhaus from Stilesville New Brunswick.

    12:00 - Music around the fire and appearance by Parka

    The Kent North Cultural Society presents singer songwriter Gaston Guimond. Come enjoy your lunch to the sound of music and dance with mascot Parka.

    13:00 to 15:00 - Sleigh rides

    Enjoy a sleigh ride along a snowy trail.

    13:00 to 16:00 - Weave along
    Bring your knitting and come relax in the heated Patterson shelter while your little ones have fun sliding on the snow. Katrina Sock, an interpreter at Kouchibouguac National Park, will be on hand to demonstrate Mi'gmaq weaving and talk about the importance of this tradition in her community. She will share her expertise, and who knows, you may have the opportunity to share yours. Hot chocolate and herbal tea will be served.

    13:00 - Dog harness sports information session

    Learn the basics of dog harness sports with Moncton Dog Runners. Meet at the Visitor Information Center.

    13:30 - Music around the fire

    Enjoy another performance of traditional East Coast music by Nathanael and Naomi Buschhaus.

    14:00 - Demonstration of winter dog harness sports

    Demonstration of winter driving sports such as sledding and skijoring. Presented by Moncton Dog Runners.

    14:30 - Open trail for dog harness sports

    This temporary trail along the parkway is groomed especially for winter dog harness sports. Dogs must be in harness and on leash.

    16:00 - Local Stories and Tales: A Return to the Good Old Days of Winter

    Come reminisce about winters of the past through stories shared by local residents. The audience will be invited to enjoy a small taste of fricot to close the activity. This family friendly activity takes place at the Pijeboogwek shelter.

    18:30 - Stargazing with the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada

    Members of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada will share their knowledge of the winter sky and constellations, including Orion Jupiter and the North Star.
