Outport Trail

Journey along the coast from Big Brook and the sheltered mudflats of Newman Sound. Hike through the forest to the abandoned settlement of Minchin Cove and on to South Broad Cove. Both are ideal sites for camping. About midway along the trail there is a 1.5 km detour to the top of Mount Stamford; one of the most spectacular views in the park.

Cross the suspension bridge at Big Brook and embark on the Outport Trail – our longest trail. Stroll through a variety of forest types including a dry sandy area, ladened with caribou moss and a pocket of pine trees, a rare site in Newfoundland. Winding your way along the trail, you will periodically break out on the coastline of Newman Sound. Roughly two thirds of the way in you can branch off the trail and climb to the summit of Mount Stamford. Soak in the panoramic oceanic views of Terra Nova National Park. Once you have rested up from the big climb, continue on to the ghost settlement of Minchins Cove. There you will discover remnants of past human use. Camp at one of our backcountry sites in Minchins Cove or South Broad Cove to rest up for the trek back.
