Yoho National Park

Area Closure: Emerald Lake (waterbody), Peaceful Pond, Lone Duck Lake, Emerald River and all tributary waters.

WHAT:  Pursuant to Section 36(1) of the National Parks General Regulations, of the Canada National Parks Act, the following area is closed to all traffic and travel by order of the Superintendent. Recreational in-water and shoreline activities including fishing, boating, paddling, swimming, diving, wading, and walking are prohibited, except on designated trails.

Use of on-site rental canoes is permitted.

 

WHERE: In-water access and shorelines of Emerald Lake, Emerald River, Peaceful Pond, Lone Duck Lake and all tributaries’ waterbodies, with the exception of designated trails.See attached map (red hatches).

 

WHY: To prevent the potential spread of whirling disease while Parks Canada investigates a suspected positive detection. This parasitic disease affects some fish species but does not present any health risks for people or other mammals.The risk factors for spreading the disease include the movement of fish, mud/sediment, aquatic vegetation, and water.

 

PENALTY: Violators may be charged under the Canada National Parks Act: maximum penalty $25 000.
