Restricted Activity - Stopping along the Trans-Canada Highway is prohibited where indicated by signs

WHAT: Pursuant to Section 7(1) of the National Parks General Regulations, of the Canada National Parks Act, the following activity is hereby prohibited by order of the Superintendent:
· Stopping in signed no stopping zones along the Trans Canada Highway in Glacier National Park, with the
exception of:
- brake check pullouts for vehicles that are legally required to stop for safety checks;
- designated trailhead parking lots and viewpoints; and
- visitor facilities.
WHERE: Trans-Canada Highway, Glacier National Park.
No stopping zones will be implemented, as needed, along sections of the Trans Canada Highway in Glacier National Park. No stopping zones will be clearly marked along the Trans Canada Highway for the duration of the restriction.
WHY: For public and wildlife safety.
1. Wildlife, including both grizzly and black bears are frequenting the road side in search of natural food. Stopping on the side of the highway:
· Creates traffic hazards that are dangerous to passing vehicles and increases the risk of wildlife being struck on the
road;
· Increases danger to wildlife through habituation to people and vehicles; and
· Increases the risk of negative wildlife-human interactions.
2. Wildfire and/or Prescribed fire in area.
PENALTY: Violators may be charged under the Canada National Parks Act. Maximum penalty $25 000.
