Dog prohibition - All backcountry areas of Glacier National Park

Issued: November 15, 2024

WHAT: Pursuant to subsection 7(1) of the National Parks General Regulations, dogs are hereby prohibited in Glacier National Parks backcountry areas.     

WHERE: All backcountry areas of Glacier National Park (defined as any area extending beyond parking lots along the Trans-Canada Highway corridor). Properly identified CARDA and SAR dogs (in-training and certified) are exempted from this prohibition when involved in training and/or rescue operations.

WHY: Most backcountry areas in Glacier National Park are subject to avalanche hazard from late fall through spring. It is difficult to maintain a dog on leash while ski touring or snowboarding. It is not only illegal to have dogs off leash in the park, in avalanche terrain, it can also pose additional risk to the dog and people in the area by:

·       Triggering an avalanche

·       Getting caught in an avalanche

PENALTY: Violators may be charged under the Canada National Parks Act. Maximum penalty $25 000.

Start date: 2024-11-15

End date: Until the seasonal end of the avalanche control program.
