Public Notice: Bison Loop closed to vehicle access

Issued: November 18, 2024

Effective November 18, 2024.

Increasing snow and icy winter road conditions in the Bison Loop are creating potentially dangerous driving conditions.  Effective November 18, 2024, Parks Canada issued notification that the Bison Loop Road in Elk Island National Park is closed to vehicle traffic.

Visitors may continue to access the Bison Loop area on foot providing they stay at least 100 metres away from bison at all times.  Visitors may park at the Mud Lake parking lot and safely access the Bison Loop area.

Bison are wild animals.  Even though they look docile, bison are dangerous, unpredictable, and may charge without warning.  Safety is a shared responsibility.  Visitors have a responsibility to be informed and to explore the park in ways that ensure both visitor and wildlife are safe.

No person shall willfully approach, remain, view, or engage in any activity within:

1) 100 metres of any bison, except when completely inside a legally positioned motor vehicle;

2) Any distance that displaces or interferes with the free, unimpeded movement of bison;

3) Any distance that creates or contributes to a potentially hazardous condition or situation.
