Pointe-au-Père Lighthouse National Historic Site

Pointe-au-Père Maritime Historic Site

Founded in 1980, this non profit organization’s mission is to educate people about the maritime history and marine environment of the area and that of Quebec as a whole.

Its main objectives are to:

  • Reveal the little known history of the Empress of Ireland and its contribution to the demographic growth of Canada;
  • Protect and enhance the value of the Empress of Ireland wreck and artifacts;
  • In collaboration with Parks Canada, reveal the importance of the Pointe-au-Père lighthouse and pilot station;
  • Create awareness of the maritime history of the area;
  • Safeguard and enhance the value of the ONONDAGA submarine;
  • Collaborate with other museum institutions in the enhancement of the maritime heritage.

Partnership context

The Parks Canada Pointe-au-Père Lighthouse National Historic Site is located near the Empress of Ireland and the Onondaga Submarine Museum. The three attractions are presented as part of the Pointe-au-Père Maritime Historic Site.

In 2011, Parks Canada and the Pointe-au-Père Maritime Site signed a partnership agreement to formalize, strengthen and develop the ties that unite them.

By this agreement, they undertake to work together to make this collaborative initiative mutually beneficial to the Parties as well as for visitors and the population and be founded on common objectives:

  • result in good communication;
  • support the mandate/mission of each party;
  • enhance visitor experience by offering quality services and products to the public;
  • participate in activities aimed at development and promotion;
  • participate in the awareness enhancement and education of the population with regard to the protection and conservation of our cultural, historic and natural heritage, and thus enlarge the audience for this topic. This objective also includes the participation of the public in any volunteer program that will enhance the development of the individual involved.
