The vast network of national historic sites of Canada includes places that embody and reveal many aspects of our national history and identity.
The Pointe-au-Père lighthouse station was designated a national historic site in 1974 because of the importance of its light and pilot station for navigation in the St. Lawrence River and Gulf.
The mandate of Phare-de-Pointe-au-Père National Historic Site is:
- to protect the resources that represent its important role as a major centre for pilot services and as an important beacon for navigation in the Gulf and St.Lawrence River;
- and to foster public understanding and appreciation.
