School program - Primary

Fortifications of Québec National Historic Site

Here are the school program activities offered at the Fortifications of Québec National Historic Site for elementary school students.

Private Vadeboncoeur's great game

Soldiers, attention!

Relive the habits of soldier Vadeboncœur in the Artillery Park, visit barracks used by French soldiers and participate in the recreation of a battle. At the end of this activity, your students will be able to name the various components of the fortifications and decipher the codes found on the cannons.

In the Arsenal Foundry, students will be introduced to the major military events of New France and observe a model of the fortifications showing how Québec City’s defenses evolved over time. A guide will reveal the secrets of Artillery Park’s cannons.

The group will then visit the interior of a period building to explore a barracks used by French soldiers. Sitting on the beds, students will learn about the different aspects of soldiers’ lives in New France: how they were recruited, what they ate, how they lived, how they kept clean and how they worked.

The visit will end with students taking part in the re-enactment of a battle between the French and the English. Who will emerge victorious this time?
