Schedule: Variable hours (evenings, weekends and holidays)

Who can apply: Persons residing within a 75-kilometer radius of Carillon, Chambly, Lachine, Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue and Saint-Ours, lock stations and who have a legal status to work in Canada.

Duties

Do you like manual work, being outside and seeing concretely the fruit of your efforts? This position is for you! The work of a lock and bridge attendant requires rigor, resourcefulness, and good physical fitness.

You will be responsible for operating locks and/or bridges*, maintaining grounds, structures and equipment, and providing courteous service to users in accordance with Parks Canada standards.

The position is physically demanding and mainly works outside (more than 10 hours a day, exposure to sun, rain and bad weather). You will walk long distances on various terrains, use stairs or ladders and could lift loads up to 20 kg.

• Operating locks
• Operating bridges and dam controls as required
• Maintaining the grounds and lock station facilities, structures, equipment and machinery
• Providing services to clients and visitors (responding to inquiries and providing information about Parks Canada and its canal/waterway facilities)

Studies

• High school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training or experience 

Experience and knowledge

• Experience in providing customer service
• Experience working in a team environment
• Experience in maintenance work
• Knowledge of Parks Canada's canal network
• Knowledge of safety procedures and regulations to be followed at historic canals  

Qualities required

• Ability to work effectively with others
• Ability to communicate orally and in writing
• Ability to make decisions and solve operational problems
• Ability to interact with visitors

Conditions of employment and requirements

• Reliability Status security clearance
• Must have a legal status to work in Canada
• Must have a valid driver's license - Class 5
• Availability to work irregular hours (4-12 hours / day, evenings, weekends and holidays) and variable weeks
• Must be available for the duration of the reporting period
• Uniform and personal protective equipment must be worn
• Obtain a Pleasure Craft Operator Card within one month of hire at the employee's expense
• Work in an environment that is sometimes noisy and busy due to visitors, boaters and users, and in sometimes difficult weather conditions
• Willingness and ability to perform demanding and sustained physical work
• All Parks Canada Agency employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and attest to their vaccination status unless accommodated based on a medical contraindication, religion, or another prohibited ground of discrimination as defined under the Canadian Human Rights Act.
