Commercial filming in Northern Ontario
Fort St. Joseph National Historic Site
By Liana Hryniewicz
Parks Canada sites in northern Ontario offer beautiful and diverse landscapes. From breathtaking natural scenery, iconic historical landmarks, and rich cultural history, it is no wonder these locations are highly desirable locations for films, television shows, commercials, and more!
Parks Canada supports commercial filming while protecting the ecological and commemorative integrity of the sites and ensuring visitor experiences are not impacted. In recent years, several commercial filming projects, including a horror movie, a commercial, and a competition-based reality show, have been completed at the heritage protected areas administered by Parks Canada, highlighting the incredible versatility and cinematic potential of northern Ontario!
There is lots of work that goes into ensuring all filming activities align with Parks Canada’s values, while minimizing impact on visitors, wildlife, and the environment. When a request is made, each application is reviewed carefully by content experts from functions such as resource conservation, visitor experience, visitor safety, and assets. Operational staff are actively involved to evaluate for potential conflicts, especially when filming activities may impact human-wildlife interactions or affect delicate ecosystems. Additionally, protecting historical artifacts, structures, and cultural assets is also a priority. Once inputs have been carefully considered and any concerns are addressed, a decision is made regarding whether the filming can proceed. If approved, a permit may be issued. In certain cases, restricted activity permits may also be required, such as when a drone is involved in filming.
On the days that filming occurs, there is a fair bit of behind-the-scenes coordination. Parks Canada staff work on logistics like parking, access routes, and safety protocols, all while making sure that visitors can continue to enjoy their time at the heritage site!
So, why allow filming at Parks Canada sites? It is a fantastic way to showcase the beauty and diversity national historic sites, national parks, and national marine conservation areas have to offer. It helps spread the word about the ecological and historical importance of these areas, boosts tourism, and highlights the region’s rich cultural heritage. Most importantly, it can be a great fit for Parks Canada’s mandate to protect and present nationally significant cultural and natural treasures.
