Sheltered by shade trees, the unusual land formations at Southwold Earthworks Historic Site near St. Thomas, Ontario hint at the remains of the pre-historic fortified village that once stood here from 1500 to 1650 AD. This village was home to 800-900 Attiwandaron (Neutral Iroquois) who lived together in as many as two dozen longhouses with two tall palisades marking the entrance to the village. Once a First Nation whose territory spanned hundreds of miles, the Attiwandaron were an important part of the history of Canada’s earliest inhabitants. Today, visitors can view the Southwold Earthworks site and the historic plaques that explain its historic legacy.
