The Ladies' Lookout Trail visits the highest point on Signal Hill. Legend has it that the women of St. John's came here to watch for ships carrying their sons, husbands and lovers, which inspired the trail's name. The earliest military defenses and signal stations were built on and around Ladies' Lookout. On September 15, 1762, British soldiers won a decisive engagement against French forces for the possession of St. John's during the Battle of Signal Hill, right at the summit of this hill.
