Sheep on the Highway at Thechàl Dhâl (Sheep Mountain)

Issued: March 03, 2020

Sheep on highway at base of Thechàl Dhâl on November 28, 2018.

Parks Canada would like to advise motorists that they can expect to see sheep on the road along a short section of the Alaska Highway northwest of Haines Junction, between the Thechàl Dhâl Visitor Centre and Soldier’s Summit Trail parking lot.

Thechàl Dhâl in Kluane National Park and Reserve is home to a subpopulation of Dall’s sheep that is a critical part of the local ecosystem and an iconic species in the Yukon, respected by residents and visitors alike. These sheep are increasingly susceptible to mortality from vehicle collisions on the highway at the base of the mountain.

The Agency would like to remind visitors that they share the surrounding habitat with wildlife and to take the necessary precautions when travelling along the Alaska Highway.
