Washroom decommission works – Rouge Beach

Issued: April 22, 2024

Ends: July 31, 2024

Work is ongoing to rehabilitate the area where the Rouge Beach washroom facility building was located.

Due to the building’s location near the Rouge River and Lake Ontario and the substantial risks regarding flooding and shoreline erosion, Parks Canada determined that the failing washroom facility at Rouge Beach had reached the end of its life cycle. As a result, the building was decommissioned in March 2024 and removed.

The building’s concrete foundation has been left in place temporarily to accommodate some amenities, such as picnic tables. Parks Canada expects that this area will open to the public by summer.

The Waterfront Trail is expected to remain open with a temporary detour in place around the work area. Visitors are asked to respect closures, signage and the direction of on-site staff. Visitors should also keep a safe distance from maintenance crews and onsite equipment and be aware of some disturbances, such as noise and heavy equipment.

Parks Canada plans to build a new permanent accessible washroom facility at Rouge Beach after implementing shoreline erosion protection measures to ensure its resiliency and sustainability in the long term. In the meantime, Parks Canada will provide temporary portable washrooms at Rouge Beach during peak operational season. As well, a new two-unit accessible washroom is planned near the upper parking area as part of the first phase of the Rouge Beach Improvements Project.

Parks Canada thanks the visiting public for their patience during ongoing works to improve facilities and the overall visitor experience at Rouge Beach and Marsh.

Visitors should direct questions or comments about planned works to rouge@pc.gc.ca.
